LUCIAN
Idebate asking Nova and Nox if they want to ride over to Morozovâs with me since heâs not on shift until tomorrow and I need to speak with him, but I decide to head over by myself. Iâm not exactly pleased with my brother at the moment for blabbing about me framing Nova for her grandmotherâs death.
Itâs something I would do, but not to her. I would make it look like Rory did it if anything, like the old bastard took her out before offing himself, but now Noxâs words are planted in Novaâs head, and thereâs nothing I can do about it.
Morozovâs girl answers the door when I knock. âYes?â She sounds hesitant.
âIâm here for Morozov.â
âHeâs sleeping.â She looks over her shoulder.
âWake him up, or I will. Iâm not talking to you without him.â
âOkay⦠Come in.â She stands back, inviting me into the house I own.
Morozov is already coming down the hall once I make it inside. âWhatâs up?â His hair is a mess, but he doesnât bother to tame it after pulling a shirt over his head.
âI need you to reach out to Bridget,â I tell the girl whoâs walking around, fluffing pillows and shit.
âMe?â she asks as if I could be speaking to someone else.
âYes. Make sure she knows Iâm willing to pay, but keep it clean. Her calls could be recorded.â
âNow?â She looks at the clock on the wall.
âIs that a problem?â
âItâs kind of late. Should I wait until morning?â
âJust try,â Morozov tells her, speaking more gently than I would have.
âShould I call or text her?â she asks after picking up her phone from the couch.
âCalm, Vera.â His accent is slightly thicker than usual, but she nods, so it must be normal for them. âCall her and invite her to lunch at the Union since leaving the island isnât an option at the moment.â
âOkay,â she whispers, then focuses on her phone. âItâs ringing,â she murmurs then brings the phone to her ear before speaking. âHey, Bridget, itâs Vera.â Her eyes lock onto Morozov, who gives an encouraging nod of approval. Iâm fucking glad I wasnât around the last time this happened, I wouldnât have had much hope for it working out, because the girl is as green as a potato.
âDo you want to grab lunch tomorrow? Iâm buying.â Her eyes dart over to me, and I relax a little. Maybe sheâs not that bad. âIâm going stir crazy just sitting in the house,â she continues. âWhat time?â Her eyes go really wide, and she giggles. âI hadnât thought that far ahead. Doesâ¦â I hold up both of my hands, my fingers splayed to indicate the time. âTen oâclock sound okay? Maybe we can take a walk on the beach or something too. Iâm just really looking forward to getting out and having some company⦠Twelve oâclock?â She waits for me to agree, then remarks, âOh yeah, thatâs fine. Iâll meet you at the school. See ya.â She taps the button to hang up the phone, and Morozov is quick to walk over and give her a hug and compliment.
